Mickey Mouse Banksy: Most ripped off, Ripoff !
In 2012, I created a piece of art using stencils and spray paint on canvas. It was a reimagination of Banksy's famous “Love is in the air” (Flower Thrower), with a playful twist—replacing Banksy’s main figure with Mickey Mouse,
This blend of street art and beloved cartoon character had a deeper meaning: sometimes, when you can't have the original, settling for a copy feels like the next best thing, Hence the name “Mickey mouse Banksy” It was a playful jab at the commodification of art a lighthearted way to explore how art is bought, sold, and sometimes imitated without understanding its true meaning..
The image was unexpectedly popular and in 2014 I produced an edition of 20 canvases all with unique coloured backgrounds and a further 6 special edition artist proofs all packed in screen printed pizza box. These sold out on day of release see link here.
This year marks 10year anniversary of the original edition… and while I sit writing this and reminiscing about old times a quick google search has reviled the Mickey Mouse Banksy was not immune to the perils of imitation and exploitation. I have found countless reproductions in Etsy and eBay stores I’ve even found one hand panted fake complete with forged Eyesaw signature that sold at auction in America. Ironically In the years that followed the image has been commodified replicated and reproduced, stripped of the context and intent that defined the original.
