Case Study: Mural Art Therapy Project at CAMHS Inpatient Psychological Services
Project Overview
In June 2023, I was approached by Megan Belcher, Art Psychotherapist at the St Aubyn Centre Colchester, to collaborate on a creative art therapy project. Megan was seeking to secure funding for a mural workshop that would engage young people in creating art on one of the external walls in the communal courtyard. The goal was to provide a therapeutic and expressive outlet for the young residents, fostering creativity, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment.
Funding and Preparation
On January 9th, 2024, Megan successfully secured £900 in funding for the project. This marked the official start of our collaboration. We scheduled a site visit on February 28th, 2024, where I conducted a thorough survey of the designated wall. I took precise measurements, assessed the condition of the surface, and noted any repairs needed before the mural could be painted.
Creative Development
After gathering all the necessary information, I began developing conceptual ideas for the mural. Based on our discussions and the therapeutic goals of the project, I created digital artwork that encapsulated the themes we wanted to explore. The digital artwork was submitted for approval on April 10th, 2024. Megan and the staff at St Aubyn were highly receptive to the design, requesting only a few minor adjustments before giving full approval.
Execution of the Mural
The mural painting was scheduled for April 23-25th, 2024. On the morning of April 23rd, I arrived at the site, ready to begin the collaborative process. The young adults from the centre were invited to participate in small groups, allowing everyone a chance to contribute. Some of the participants had prior experience with spray paints, while others were new to the medium. Each group spent time preparing the wall and adding their own creative touches to the mural.
As the day progressed, participants rotated in and out, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to engage with the project. Once all the groups had contributed, I spent the remaining time perfecting and completing the mural, ensuring that the final piece reflected the collective efforts and creativity of all involved.
Project Impact and Future Plans
The completion of the mural had a profound impact on the young participants. The project not only beautified the communal courtyard but also provided a meaningful and therapeutic experience for the young people involved. It gave them a sense of ownership and pride in their environment.
Following the success of this project, Megan has secured an additional £1,500 in funding to create murals on two more courtyard walls within the facility. We are currently in the early stages of planning, with discussion groups being held with the young people to generate ideas and themes for the next murals.
